This tour is a study of the attack Second Corps of the Army of the Potomac with emphasis on the Second and Third Divisions’ tactical operations. Guests will explore the ground over which the Second Corps approached the battlefield and the reconnaissance of Edwin Summer as he struggles to fulfill the intent of his orders against the realities of the ground. Guests will follow the Second Division from Antietam Creek to the edge of the West Woods to witness the terrain and approach to the fighting that opened the “ball” of the Battle of Antietam. This is a great precursor for those interested in studying the West Woods fighting with a follow-on specialty tour of the 1st Minnesota.
